Applications & Materials

Our Multi-Jet Fusion (MJF) 3D printing process now uses both PA11 and PA12.

Although PA11 and PA12 are nylon-based polyamides with shared similarities, they have distinct material properties and are suited for different applications, which we’ve broken down below.

PA11 (Bio-Based Nylon 11)

Sustainably sourced from castor beans, supporting lower-impact and more responsible automotive manufacturing
Maintains toughness across a wide temperature range, suitable for interior and exterior automotive environments
Withstands daily stress and repetitive loading without cracking or fatigue failure
Commonly used for clips, grommets, cable guides, ducting, and protective covers requiring resilience

PA12 (Nylon 12)

Exceptional dimensional stability and surface finish for tight tolerances and visible or functional components
High stiffness and mechanical strength, ideal for load-bearing or structural automotive components
Strong resistance to oils, fuels, greases, chemicals, and moisture found in automotive environments
Enables precise, repeatable part accuracy for consistent quality in low-to-medium batch production
Commonly used for brackets, housings, air-management components, and assembly tooling

Finishing

Whilst the ‘natural’ grey finish of MJF is perfect for many hidden or non cosmetic parts, it’s our dyeing, shot peening and Cerakote options that give colour and surface finish to rival injection moulding.

Shot Peening:

Our shot peening finishing service gives customers the ability to create a low sheen and fine texture that is typically associated with many consumer products. After shot peening, the parts are more mark-resistant, without changing the outer dimensions and fine details of the parts.

Cerakote:

Cerakote is a very thin film coating that is ideal for colouring and enhancing the properties of 3D printed parts. With a choice of 150+ standard colours, plus colour matching and mixing options, Cerakote’s very thin (8-25 microns) coating makes minimal changes to part geography and ensures threads can be coated without clogging. The coating is UV stable, chemical resistant, hydrophobic, lipophobic and offers a high radiant heat resistance.
